Why Be A Surrogate?

Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.

Compensation & Costs for Surrogacy in Maryland

In Maryland, base compensation for a first-time gestational surrogate typically ranges from $55,000 to $65,000. This amount reflects the significant physical, emotional, and time commitment involved in carrying a child for someone else. If you have previous experience as a surrogate, your base compensation may be higher—often $70,000 or more—to reflect your prior involvement and understanding of the process.

Additional Benefits

In addition to base compensation, surrogates in Maryland receive reimbursements and stipends to support their health and comfort throughout the journey. These typically include:

  • Maternity Clothing Allowance: A fixed stipend for purchasing clothing and other pregnancy essentials.
  • Medical Insurance: Intended parents are responsible for securing a comprehensive insurance policy that covers prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care.
  • Monthly Allowance: A regular stipend to help cover incidental expenses, such as transportation to appointments or minor out-of-pocket costs.
  • Childcare and Travel Expenses: Childcare costs are reimbursed when needed for appointments, along with mileage, lodging, or meals if travel is required.
  • Signing Bonus: A bonus is offered in two payments, $1000 when you are medically cleared by your Intended Parents IVF doctor, and then $3,000 when you sign your surrogacy agreement with the IPs, recognizing your commitment from the outset.

When these benefits are combined, a Maryland surrogate’s total compensation package can often approach or exceed $80,000.

Health Insurance and Medical Coverage

While Maryland does not have legislation that directly governs surrogacy, it is standard for intended parents to provide full medical coverage related to the pregnancy. This includes reimbursement of deductibles, copays, and any other costs tied to prenatal visits, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. If your current insurance does not cover surrogacy, the intended parents will secure a suitable policy or arrange for additional coverage to close any gaps.

Support and Security Throughout the Process

Maryland is known for its well-established, court-supported surrogacy process. With pre-birth parentage orders and legal protections available through experienced attorneys, you can move forward with peace of mind. At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we are here to make sure you are fully supported—from understanding your compensation to navigating each legal and medical step with confidence.

Maryland Surrogate Requirements

At ABC Surrogacy, we’re honored to work with compassionate women across Maryland who are ready to help families grow. To ensure a safe and successful journey for everyone involved, our surrogates must meet a few key criteria.

We generally work with surrogates between 21 and 40 years old.

This age range supports a healthy and stable pregnancy while accounting for overall wellness and life circumstances.

A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18 and 32 is recommended.

Maintaining a healthy BMI reduces the risk of complications and supports a smoother pregnancy for both you and the baby.

To be eligible, you must have carried at least one pregnancy to term without major complications.

This helps ensure your body is physically ready for another pregnancy and that you have a clear understanding of what to expect.

You must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or green card holder.

If you hold legal residency, your documentation should be valid for at least two more years. This helps streamline legal procedures and ensures that Maryland courts can confidently grant parentage orders.

Each surrogate completes a comprehensive medical screening to confirm overall health and identify any conditions that could affect pregnancy.

You’ll also take part in a psychological evaluationto make sure you’re emotionally prepared for the responsibilities of surrogacy. We want you to feel secure, supported, and ready.

A background check is part of our standard process.

This helps confirm there are no legal or ethical concerns that might impact the match or the intended parents’ peace of mind.

All surrogates must have independent legal representation to review and explain the surrogacy contract.

This ensures your rights are protected and that you fully understand every aspect of the agreement before moving forward. Your attorney will be by your side to guide you through the legal process with clarity and care. ABC will help you find an attorney experienced in representing surrogates through surrogacy.

Surrogacy in Maryland is both empowering and life-changing. With the right support system and thoughtful screening, you can begin this journey with confidence—knowing that your health, rights, and contributions are fully respected every step of the way.

The Surrogacy Process

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we follow trusted best practices—like those recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)—to ensure a safe, respectful, and fulfilling surrogacy journey for everyone involved. Here’s an overview of what you can expect when you become a surrogate in Maryland.

Matching and Contracting

We take the matching process seriously—reviewing your preferences alongside those of the intended parents to create a meaningful, comfortable connection. Independent consultations help both parties discuss values, communication styles, and expectations before committing to move forward.

Once you and your intended parents are ready, we’ll connect you with an experienced Maryland-based surrogacy attorney to review and negotiate the contract. You’ll receive independent legal counsel to ensure your rights are protected and that you fully understand every part of your agreement.

Signing the Agreement

After careful discussion and agreement on all terms, both you and the intended parents sign a legal surrogacy contract. This document outlines compensation, roles and responsibilities, delivery preferences, and other important details—setting the stage for a smooth and informed journey together.

Ongoing & Communication

After a successful embryo transfer, you’ll continue with routine prenatal care from your OB/GYN. Regular checkups, open communication with the intended parents, and the support of our team help keep everything on track and everyone informed. Many intended parents enjoy staying updated on the pregnancy and sharing in milestones with you along the way.

Legal Preperations

Around the second trimester, we’ll notify your legal team to begin the process of securing a pre-birth parentage order, especially when at least one intended parent shares a genetic connection with the child. This ensures that, by the time of delivery, the intended parents’ legal rights are fully in place.

Delivery & Post-Birth Considerations

Surrogacy is a meaningful commitment, one that goes beyond just medical appointments. It’s an emotional and physical experience that requires communication, patience, and the support of loved ones. Having a solid foundation—whether through a partner, close friends, or family, helps you stay grounded throughout the ups and downs of pregnancy.

At ABC Surrogacy, we make sure you have emotional and logistical support every step of the way, so you feel valued and cared for through the entire process.

While we have discussed some useful information regarding the qualifications, the best way to learn more about surrogacy is to give us a call at (323) 207-5762 with no commitment required. We are here to answer all your questions.

Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families in Maryland

At Abundant Beginnings, we are committed to inclusivity and equality, welcoming intended parents of all backgrounds, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.

By partnering with us as a surrogate, you may have the opportunity to help create families for same-sex couples, single parents, or others building nontraditional family structures. Each journey is unique, and we approach every match with the care and professionalism it deserves.

Maryland is a surrogacy-friendly state with a strong history of supporting LGBTQ+ family building. The state’s legal process allows intended parents to obtain pre-birth parentage orders—regardless of marital status or biological connection—ensuring that legal parentage is recognized from the moment of birth. The birth certificate reflects the intended parent(s) only, never the gestational surrogate, and there are no legal barriers based on gender or orientation.

At ABC Surrogacy, we strive to make every surrogate feel respected, supported, and valued. We understand that being part of a family’s journey is deeply meaningful, and we’re here to ensure that your experience is one of connection and purpose.

When you work with us, you join a compassionate and experienced community that honors your role and respects the many ways families are formed. We’re proud to support the creation of loving, inclusive families across Maryland, and we’re honored to walk beside you every step of the way.
