Why Be A Surrogate?

Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.

Compensation & Costs for Surrogacy in Washington D.C.

For a first-time surrogate in Washington D.C., base compensation typically ranges from $55,000 to $65,000, along with an additional $4,000 bonus. This amount reflects the significant commitment of time, energy, and care you are making throughout the journey. If you have previous experience as a surrogate, you may be eligible for higher compensation, often exceeding $70,000, to recognize your experience and the unique insight you bring.

Additional Benefits

In addition to base compensation, surrogates in Washington D.C. receive reimbursements and stipends to help support their physical and emotional wellbeing throughout the process. These may include:

  • Maternity Clothing Allowance: A set amount to purchase pregnancy-related clothing and essentials.
  • Medical Insurance: Intended parents are responsible for securing or providing a policy that covers prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum needs.
  • Monthly Allowance: A regular stipend to help with everyday costs such as transportation to appointments, phone expenses, or minor pregnancy-related needs with no receipts required.
  • Childcare and Travel Costs: Childcare expenses are covered when needed for appointments, and all travel expenses, such as fuel, parking, or overnight stays, are reimbursed.
  • $4,000 Signing Bonus: A bonus is offered in two payments, $1000 when you are medically cleared by your Intended Parents IVF doctor, and then $3,000 when you sign your surrogacy agreement with the IPs, recognizing your commitment from the outset.

Altogether, when these additional benefits are included, the total compensation for a D.C. surrogate can easily approach or exceed $80,000.

Health Insurance and Coverage

Under the Collaborative Reproduction Amendment Act of 2016, surrogacy agreements in Washington D.C. require intended parents to cover reasonable medical and ancillary expenses. This includes full reimbursement of deductibles, copayments, and any other pregnancy-related costs. If your current health insurance does not cover surrogacy-related care, the intended parents will secure an appropriate policy or ensure all gaps are addressed.

A Secure and Respectful Process

Washington D.C. law provides strong protections for surrogates, ensuring that both financial and medical needs are addressed clearly and fairly. By working with a trusted agency like Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), you can feel confident knowing that your rights will be respected and that experienced professionals will support you throughout the process.

Washington D.C. Surrogate Requirements

At ABC Surrogacy, we’re honored to work with compassionate women across Washington D.C. who are ready to help families grow. To ensure a safe and successful journey for everyone involved, our surrogates must meet a few key criteria.

We work with surrogates between 21 and 40 years old.

This age range supports a healthy and stable pregnancy while accounting for overall wellness and life circumstances.

A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18 and 32 is recommended.

Maintaining a healthy BMI reduces the risk of complications and supports a smoother pregnancy for both you and the baby.

To be eligible, you must have carried at least one pregnancy to term without major complications.

This helps ensure your body is physically ready for another pregnancy and that you have a clear understanding of what to expect.

You must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or green card holder.

If you hold legal residency, your documentation should be valid for at least two more years. This helps streamline legal procedures and ensures that courts can confidently grant parentage orders.

Each surrogate completes a comprehensive medical screening to confirm overall health and identify any conditions that could affect pregnancy.

You’ll also take part in a psychological evaluation to make sure you’re emotionally prepared for the responsibilities of surrogacy. We want you to feel secure, supported, and ready.

A background check is part of our standard process.

This helps confirm there are no legal or ethical concerns that might impact the match or the intended parents’ peace of mind.

All surrogates must have independent legal representation to review and explain the surrogacy contract.

This ensures your rights are protected and that you fully understand every aspect of the agreement before moving forward. Your attorney will be by your side to guide you through the legal process with clarity and care. ABC will help you find an attorney experienced in representing surrogates through surrogacy.

Surrogacy in Washington D.C. is both empowering and life-changing. With the right support system and thoughtful screening, you can begin this journey with confidence, knowing that your health, rights, and contributions are fully respected every step of the way.

The Surrogacy Process

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we follow trusted best practices—like those recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)—to ensure a safe, respectful, and fulfilling surrogacy journey for everyone involved. Here’s an overview of what you can expect when you become a surrogate in Washington D.C.

Screening Process for Potential Surrogates

Becoming a surrogate in Washington D.C. is a meaningful and rewarding experience. Thanks to the Collaborative Reproduction Amendment Act of 2016, D.C. offers a clear legal framework that protects and respects the roles of surrogates and intended parents alike.

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we guide you through each step, beginning with a thorough screening process to ensure that everyone involved is well-prepared, healthy, and supported.

Required Screenings

Before being matched with intended parents, you will complete several important screening phases. Our experienced team will walk with you through each step, offering guidance, clarity, and care.

Medical Screening

  • Detailed Evaluation: A Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) will conduct a comprehensive medical review, including an assessment of your health history, a physical exam, and lab testing.
  • Partner Participation: If you have a partner, they may also be asked to complete lab screenings, helping ensure a stable and healthy home environment.
  • Confirming Readiness: The medical evaluation is designed to confirm that you are physically prepared to carry a pregnancy safely and successfully.

Criminal Background Checks

Background checks are conducted for all adults living in your household, including your partner if applicable. This step supports the safety and peace of mind of everyone involved and helps establish a foundation of trust between surrogates and intended parents.

Here to Support You

We understand that the screening process can feel detailed and involved, but you are not alone. At ABC Surrogacy, we are committed to helping you every step of the way. From paperwork to appointments, our team ensures that the process remains clear, respectful, and manageable.

While we have discussed some useful information regarding the qualifications, the best way to learn more about surrogacy is to give us a call at (323) 207-5762 with no commitment required. We are here to answer all your questions.

Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families in Washington D.C.

At Abundant Beginnings, we are committed to inclusivity and equity in every surrogacy journey. We welcome all intended parents, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status, and we support surrogates who want to be part of building diverse, loving families.

As a surrogate, you may be matched with same-sex couples, single intended parents, or other family configurations that reflect the broad spectrum of family life today. Each match is made with care, and each journey is approached with the respect and professionalism it deserves.

Washington D.C.’s Collaborative Reproduction Amendment Act of 2016 ensures that all intended parents, including LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, have equal access to legal parentage through surrogacy. The law makes clear that legal recognition of parentage is not limited by gender or marital status. From the moment of birth, intended parents are recognized as the child’s legal parents, affirming the rights of modern families in the District.

At ABC Surrogacy, we aim to make every surrogate feel supported and valued throughout the process. We understand that this journey is not only about helping others, it’s also about finding purpose and connection through the creation of family in all its forms.

If you choose to become a surrogate in Washington D.C., you’ll be joining a compassionate and inclusive community that honors your contribution and celebrates the families you help bring to life.
