Why Be A Surrogate?

Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.

Compensation & Financial Benefits

For first-time surrogates in Maine, base compensation generally ranges from $55,000 to $65,000, acknowledging the significant time, dedication, and physical investment that surrogacy requires. Experienced surrogates who have successfully completed previous journeys may receive enhanced base compensation—between $70,000 to $85,000—in recognition of their valuable experience and proven commitment.

Comprehensive Support Package

Beyond your base compensation, Maine surrogates receive extensive reimbursements and allowances designed to support your wellness throughout the entire experience. These comprehensive benefits aim to eliminate pregnancy-related financial concerns and ensure your complete comfort, including:

  • Maternity Wardrobe Stipend – A dedicated allowance to help you acquire comfortable and suitable clothing throughout your pregnancy.
  • Complete Medical Coverage – Intended parents assume responsibility for securing or providing comprehensive insurance that addresses all prenatal care, delivery services, and postpartum requirements.
  • Monthly Support Allowance – A regular stipend covering daily expenses related to your pregnancy—including transportation costs, parking fees, and communication needs.
  • Childcare and Transportation Coverage – If you’re in the need of childcare, those expenses for medical visits are fully covered. All travel-related costs including mileage, tolls, and accommodations (when necessary) are completely reimbursed.
  • $4,000 Contract Bonus – This substantial bonus payment is provided in 2 installments, $1,000 at the time of medical clearance and $3,000 at the time of legal clearance, acknowledging your dedication and providing immediate financial support as you begin this journey.

When combined with these additional benefits, the complete compensation package for first time Maine surrogates frequently reaches—or exceeds—$85,000.

Medical Coverage & Legal Safeguards in Maine

Under Maine’s Parentage Act, intended parents bear legal responsibility for covering all surrogacy-related medical costs not addressed by existing insurance coverage. This encompasses deductibles, co-payments, and services not covered by standard policies. Should your current health insurance exclude surrogacy coverage, alternative coverage will be established to guarantee complete protection throughout your experience.

Security & Transparency with ABC Surrogacy

Maine’s updated surrogacy legislation ensures that surrogacy agreements are legally binding and enforceable—providing enhanced transparency and protection at every stage. When you collaborate with an established agency like Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), you receive support from a dedicated, experienced team committed to ensuring you receive appropriate compensation, comprehensive care, and the respect you deserve. From legal advocacy to emotional guidance, we’re committed to ensuring you feel appreciated throughout your journey.

Maine Surrogate Requirements

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we have the privilege of partnering with dedicated, caring women who desire to assist others in building their families. To guarantee a safe and positive experience for all participants, we maintain a thorough evaluation process based on medical excellence and Maine’s legal requirements.

Age Parameters

We typically collaborate with surrogates between ages 21 and 40. This age bracket helps minimize medical complications while ensuring each candidate possesses the physical and emotional readiness for pregnancy.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

A BMI ranging from 18 to 32 is preferred. Maintaining healthy weight reduces potential pregnancy complications and promotes a more positive experience for both you and the baby.

Previous Successful Pregnancy

You must have previously carried at least one pregnancy to full term without significant complications. This requirement confirms your body’s capability and provides you with personal understanding of the pregnancy experience.

Medical & Mental Health Evaluations

All surrogates complete thorough medical assessments to verify overall health and identify potential risks.

You’ll also participate in psychological evaluation to confirm emotional preparedness and adequate support throughout the surrogacy experience.

Background Verification

Standard background screening applies to both you and your partner (if applicable), as well as the Intended Parent(s) you are helping. This process helps guarantee safety and confidence for all involved parties.

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency

Maine surrogates must maintain U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or possess a valid green card with proper documentation. Appropriate documentation ensures your rights receive full protection under Maine’s surrogacy statutes, including the established Parentage Act.

At ABC Surrogacy, our objective is providing you with resources, support, and guidance necessary to begin your journey with complete confidence. If you’re contemplating becoming a surrogate in Maine, we would be honored to accompany you on this meaningful path.

The Surrogacy Process

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we adhere to established industry standards—including guidelines from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)—to ensure your surrogacy experience is safe, respectful, and profoundly fulfilling. Below is a detailed overview of what to expect when becoming a surrogate in Maine.

Matching & Legal Contracting

We initiate the process by carefully evaluating the preferences and values of both you and prospective intended parents to establish compatible partnerships. Independent consultations are scheduled to allow all parties to discuss expectations, communication preferences, and mutual objectives, creating a strong foundation from the beginning.

Once you and a family choose to proceed together, experienced Maine surrogacy attorneys facilitate the legal process for all parties. According to Maine law, you’ll receive independent legal representation at no personal cost (paid by the IPs) to ensure your rights are thoroughly protected and every aspect of the agreement is completely understood.

Agreement Execution

When all parties are prepared, you’ll examine and execute a formal surrogacy contract. In compliance with Maine’s Parentage Act, this agreement specifies:

  • Legal obligations and protections
  • Compensation structure and reimbursement schedules
  • Health and decision-making autonomy during pregnancy
  • Delivery procedures, communication protocols, and medical decision-making authority

All contracts require notarization and completion before administering any fertility medications, meeting state mandates.

Medical Protocol & Pregnancy

Under fertility specialist supervision, you’ll begin a customized medical regimen that prepares your body for embryo transfer. This phase typically includes hormonal medications and lifestyle recommendations to support a healthy, successful pregnancy.

You’ll maintain regular communication with your medical team, adhering to all instructions regarding timing and dosages. ABC Surrogacy remains available whenever you have questions or require support during this phase.

Continuous Care & Communication

Following pregnancy confirmation, you’ll begin standard prenatal care with your obstetrician. You’ll also maintain contact with intended parents, providing updates on significant milestones and keeping everyone informed. Open, respectful communication forms the foundation of a positive experience for everyone.

Legal Documentation

Around 15 weeks of pregnancy (or as recommended by your legal team), ABC Surrogacy will coordinate with your attorney to initiate pre-birth parentage proceedings. This ensures intended parents’ names appear on the baby’s birth certificate immediately following delivery, typically eliminating the need for post-birth adoption.

Maine law provides robust legal protections for both you and intended parents, delivering clarity and peace of mind as you approach delivery.

Delivery & Post-Birth Care

Surrogacy extends beyond medical procedures. It represents an emotional and deeply personal experience. From maintaining regular contact with intended parents to managing the physical and emotional aspects of pregnancy, many surrogates describe it as a part-time commitment with full-time significance.

Establishing a strong support network, whether through a partner, family member, or close friend, can significantly impact your experience. We also recommend entering the process from a position of emotional stability, preparing you to navigate any challenges with resilience and composure.

Delivery Day & Afterward

On delivery day, your hospital team, ABC Surrogacy, and intended parents collaborate to ensure a smooth and respectful experience. Following delivery, legal documents are completed and intended parents’ names are recorded on the birth certificate, according to Maine law.

The post-delivery period often brings feelings of relief, pride, and joy, knowing you’ve created a life-changing impact for another family.

Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families

At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), inclusivity forms the foundation of our mission. We enthusiastically support all family-building journeys—regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship status—and we’re privileged to work with surrogates who embrace our commitment to creating loving families in every form.

When you partner with ABC Surrogacy, you may have opportunities to help build families for same-sex couples, single parents, and LGBTQ+ individuals throughout Maine and neighboring regions. Each journey receives respectful, compassionate, and attentive care, recognizing the unique path every intended parent travels.

With Maine’s Parentage Act, our state has demonstrated progressive leadership in surrogacy equality. The legislation explicitly protects the rights of all intended parents, regardless of gender or marital status, to establish legal parentage from birth. This means:

  • Pre-birth orders are accessible to LGBTQ+ individuals and couples
  • Birth certificates designate intended parents as “Parent and Parent,” ensuring equal recognition
  • Legal procedures no longer require genetic connections or conventional family structures to define parenthood

These legal advances reflect Maine’s forward-thinking, inclusive values and enable surrogates and intended parents to proceed with confidence and certainty.

At ABC Surrogacy, we ensure every surrogate feels secure, respected, and supported throughout their experience. By joining us, you’re not only helping expand a family—you’re also contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate future.

If you believe in love’s power to create families in all forms, we would be honored to share this journey with you.
