Why Be A Surrogate?
Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.
Compensation & Costs
For a first-time surrogate in New Jersey, base compensation typically ranges between $55,000 and $65,000. This amount reflects the extraordinary commitment you’re making physically, emotionally, and in terms of your time and energy. If you’ve been a surrogate before, your base compensation may exceed $70,000, honoring the experience and insight you bring to the journey.
Additional Benefits
Beyond base compensation, New Jersey surrogates working with ABC also receive a comprehensive package of stipends and reimbursements to support your well-being every step of the way. These benefits often include:
- Maternity Clothing Allowance – A set stipend to cover the cost of comfortable, pregnancy-appropriate clothing and essentials.
- Medical Insurance – Intended parents will secure or fund a health insurance policy that covers all pregnancy-related medical needs, including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum recovery.
- Monthly Allowance – A regular stipend to cover incidental costs such as parking for doctor’s visits, phone usage, or other day-to-day expenses tied to the pregnancy.
- Childcare & Travel Reimbursements – If you have children at home, childcare is covered when you attend appointments. Travel-related costs such as gas, tolls, or hotel stays (if needed) are also reimbursed.
- $4,000 Signing Bonus – A one-time payment made when you sign your surrogacy contract, recognizing your commitment from day one.
With all of these benefits combined, the total compensation package for New Jersey surrogates can often approach or surpass $80,000, a reflection of the immense value you bring to the surrogacy process.
Health Insurance & Coverage
Under New Jersey’s surrogacy laws, intended parents are responsible for ensuring that their surrogate has comprehensive health coverage. You should not pay out-of-pocket for prenatal, delivery, or postpartum medical care. If your current health insurance does not include surrogacy coverage, the intended parents will either supplement it or provide a policy that does ensuring that every step of your medical care is fully supported.
Peace of Mind for Everyone
Thanks to the legal protections outlined in the New Jersey Gestational Carrier Agreement Act, you can begin your surrogacy journey knowing that your medical and financial needs will be clearly addressed in a legally binding contract. When you work with a trusted agency like Abundant Beginnings Co., you’re not only partnering with experienced professionals, you’re joining a team that’s committed to advocating for your comfort, your safety, and your success every step of the way.
New Jersey Surrogate Requirements
Age Requirements
At Abundant Beginnings Company, we typically work with surrogates between the ages of 21 and 40.
This age range helps ensure that surrogates are physically prepared for pregnancy while also balancing overall health, lifestyle, and emotional readiness.
Previous Healthy Pregnancy
Before becoming a surrogate in New Jersey, you must have carried at least one healthy pregnancy to full term without major complications.
This demonstrates that your body is capable of sustaining a pregnancy and gives you valuable insight into what to expect throughout the journey.
Medical Screening
All prospective surrogates undergo comprehensive medical screenings to confirm overall health and identify any conditions that might increase pregnancy risks.
This careful assessment helps safeguard your health and ensures a safer surrogacy journey for both you and the child.
Psychological Evaluation
Every surrogate must complete a comprehensive medical evaluation to confirm overall health and screen for any conditions that could pose risks during pregnancy.
You’ll also participate in a psychological evaluation to ensure you’re emotionally prepared for the unique role of surrogacy. Our goal is for you to feel confident, supported, and ready every step of the way.
Healthy Lifestyle
A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18 and 32 is recommended.
Maintaining a healthy BMI helps reduce potential medical risks during pregnancy, supporting a smoother and safer experience for both you and the baby.
Legal Representation
New Jersey law requires that all surrogates be represented by their own independent attorney to review the surrogacy contract.
Your attorney will help you understand every aspect of the agreement, advocate for your interests, and make sure your rights are clearly protected under New Jersey surrogacy law. At ABC, we’ll help you find experienced legal counsel so you feel empowered and informed throughout the process.
Background Check
A background check is included in the screening process.
This helps ensure there are no legal or ethical issues that might impact your journey—or the trust between you and the intended parents.
U.S Citizenship or Permanent Residency
You must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or green card holder.
If you are a legal resident or immigrant, you’ll need documentation valid for at least two years. Having this in place ensures a smooth legal process and that your rights and protections under New Jersey’s Gestational Carrier Agreement Act are fully honored.
Screening Process for Potential Surrogates
Becoming a surrogate in New Jersey is a life-changing experience—one that brings joy, purpose, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference. With the passage of the New Jersey Gestational Carrier Agreement Act, the state now offers a clearly defined and surrogacy-friendly legal environment. At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we walk with you through every step of the process, starting with a thorough screening phase to ensure that you, the intended parents, and the future baby are all set up for a healthy and successful journey.
Required Screenings
Before being matched with intended parents, you’ll complete several key screenings. These evaluations are designed to confirm your physical, emotional, and legal readiness to be a surrogate. Our experienced team is here to guide and support you through each step with care, clarity, and compassion.
Medical Screening
- Extensive Evaluation – A Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) will conduct a detailed medical assessment. This includes reviewing your health history, performing a physical exam, and ordering necessary lab work to ensure your body is ready for a healthy pregnancy.
- Partner Involvement – If you have a partner, they may also complete some medical screenings to ensure a stable and supportive home environment throughout your journey.
- Overall Suitability – These evaluations help safeguard your health and the well-being of the baby, providing a strong foundation for a safe and successful surrogacy.
Psychological Evaluation & Personality Testing
- Emotional Readiness – You’ll meet with a licensed mental health professional (along with your partner, if applicable) to explore your motivations, expectations, and emotional preparedness.
- Personality Testing – This provides additional insight into your strengths and emotional resilience, ensuring you’re well-equipped for the responsibilities of surrogacy.
- Ongoing Support – Should you move forward, you’ll have access to mental health resources throughout your surrogacy journey. Your emotional well-being is just as important as your physical health.
Criminal Background Checks
- Safety & Trust – Every adult living in your household, including you and your partner, will undergo a background check. This step ensures a safe, secure environment for the intended parents and the child.
- Peace of Mind – ABC’s thorough screening process helps build a foundation of trust and respect—core values we believe are essential in every surrogacy relationship.

The Surrogacy Process
At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we’re committed to following industry best practices, such as those recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, to ensure that your surrogacy journey is thoughtful, empowering, and legally secure.
Below is a general overview of what you can expect when you become a surrogate in New Jersey.
Matching and Contracting
We take great care in matching you with intended parents who align with your values, personality, and preferences. Both you and the intended parents will complete detailed profiles, and our team will facilitate independent conversations to ensure shared expectations, communication styles, and comfort levels.
Once a match is confirmed, experienced surrogacy attorneys will step in to guide both sides through the legal process. Under New Jersey’s Gestational Carrier Agreement Act, both you and the intended parents must have independent legal counsel, and we’ll help connect you with someone knowledgeable who will advocate for your rights and ensure you fully understand every aspect of the agreement.
Signing the Agreement
Once terms are reviewed and agreed upon, both parties will sign a legally binding Gestational Carrier Agreement. This contract outlines responsibilities, compensation, medical expectations, decision-making preferences, and other important details—giving you peace of mind and a clear, shared understanding with the intended parents.
Ongoing Care & Communication
Following a successful embryo transfer and confirmation of pregnancy, you’ll transition to standard prenatal care with your chosen OB/GYN. At this stage, we encourage open communication between you and the intended parents to maintain trust and connection throughout the pregnancy.
Our team remains involved to coordinate milestones and offer support whenever needed.
Legal Preperations
In New Jersey, establishing legal parentage typically begins around 15 weeks into the pregnancy, or at a time recommended by your attorney. Through a pre-birth order, the court confirms that the intended parents will be the legal parents of the baby at birth. This process is well established in New Jersey and generally does not require a court appearance. Once the order is granted, the intended parents’ names can be placed directly on the birth certificate, ensuring a smooth legal transition post-delivery.
Delivery & Post-Birth Considerations
Surrogacy is more than just a medical process. It’s a unique emotional and personal commitment. From hormone shifts to the deep bond that forms with the intended parents, the experience can feel like a part-time job. That’s why it’s so important to have a strong support system of family, friends, or a partner who understands the journey you’re on.
Being emotionally prepared and entering surrogacy from a grounded, stable place helps you handle the natural challenges of pregnancy and any unexpected situations with confidence and care.
Delivery Day & Beyond
When it’s time to give birth, your hospital team, the intended parents, and ABC Surrogacy will work together to ensure the experience is positive and well-coordinated. Thanks to New Jersey’s surrogacy laws, legal parentage and hospital protocols are typically clear, allowing for a seamless transition as the baby is welcomed into their new family.
After birth, you’ll have time to rest, recover, and reflect on the incredible gift you’ve given. The post-birth experience is often filled with a mix of emotion, pride, and celebration, knowing that you helped make a family’s dream come true.

Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families
At Abundant Beginnings Co., we proudly embrace the principle of inclusivity, offering equal opportunities to all surrogates, regardless of the sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status of the intended parents.
As a surrogate with ABC, you may have the opportunity to help create families for same-sex couples, single parents, or LGBTQ+ individuals, each with their own beautiful and meaningful journey to parenthood. We approach every match with respect, sensitivity, and professionalism, ensuring all family structures are welcomed and supported.
New Jersey is one of the most progressive and inclusive states in the country when it comes to surrogacy. Under the New Jersey Gestational Carrier Agreement Act, the law clearly defines and protects the rights of LGBTQ+ intended parents. Legal parentage can be established through a pre-birth order, and both parents, regardless of gender or marital status, can be named on the birth certificate from the start.
By removing outdated barriers and embracing diverse family-building paths, New Jersey reflects the values we hold at ABC Surrogacy: every family matters, and every surrogate deserves to feel valued and supported.
A Supportive, Respectful Experience
We understand that surrogacy is more than a process—it’s a partnership built on trust, communication, and shared goals. Whether you are matched with a heterosexual couple, a same-sex couple, or a single intended parent, our team will be by your side to ensure the experience is positive, respectful, and fulfilling.
