Becoming a Surrogate in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Parentage Act makes the surrogacy process in Massachusetts clearer, safer, and more supportive than ever before for both surrogates and intended parents. If you’re considering becoming a surrogate in Massachusetts—or you’re simply curious about what the journey could look like—we invite you to connect with our experienced team.
Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy) was founded by two women with over 30 years of combined experience in the surrogacy world. Their professional expertise, paired with deeply personal experiences as surrogates, fuels our mission to provide compassionate, knowledgeable guidance to anyone considering surrogacy in Massachusetts.
At ABC Surrogacy, you’re never just a part of the process. Your part of something bigger: a community built on empathy, purpose, and the shared joy of helping others grow their families.
“In spite of the challenges I faced, this was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done…If you are considering surrogacy, I truly believe you are a special person… This was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.”
Why Be A Surrogate?
Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.
Compensation & Costs
For a first-time surrogate in Massachusetts, base compensation typically ranges from $55,000 to $65,000, reflecting the extraordinary time, care, and physical commitment that surrogacy involves. If you’ve previously been a surrogate, your compensation may be even higher – often exceeding $70,000 – to honor the experience and dedication you bring to the process.
Additional Benefits
In addition to your base pay, surrogates in Massachusetts receive a variety of reimbursements and stipends to support their well-being throughout the journey. These benefits are designed to ease the financial burden of pregnancy-related costs and ensure your comfort. They may include:
- Maternity Clothing Allowance
A designated stipend to help you purchase comfortable and appropriate attire for pregnancy. - Medical Insurance Coverage
Intended parents are responsible for securing or covering a comprehensive insurance policy that meets all prenatal, delivery, and postpartum needs. - Monthly Allowance
An ongoing stipend to cover day-to-day expenses tied to the pregnancy – like gas, parking, or phone use. - Childcare and Travel Reimbursement
If you have children at home, childcare for medical appointments is covered. Travel expenses such as mileage, tolls, or lodging (if needed) are also reimbursed. - $4,000 Signing Bonus
This one-time payment is made when you sign your surrogacy contract, recognizing your commitment and helping you begin the journey with financial peace of mind.
When you factor in these additional benefits, the total compensation package for a Massachusetts surrogate can often approach – or exceed – $80,000.
Health Insurance & Legal Protections
Under the Massachusetts Parentage Act, intended parents are legally required to cover all surrogacy-related medical expenses not otherwise paid by insurance. That includes deductibles, copayments, and uncovered services. If your current health insurance doesn’t cover surrogacy, a separate policy will be arranged to ensure you’re fully protected throughout your journey.
Confidence & Clarity with ABC Surrogacy
Thanks to the new Massachusetts laws, surrogacy agreements are now legally recognized and enforceable – bringing greater transparency and security to every step of the process. When you work with a trusted agency like Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), you’ll be supported by a caring, experienced team that ensures you receive the compensation, care, and respect you deserve. From legal guidance to emotional support, we’re here to make sure you feel valued
Massachusetts Surrogate Requirements
At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we’re honored to work with strong, compassionate women who want to help others build families. To ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone involved, we follow a careful screening process based on both medical best practices and Massachusetts legal guidelines.
Here’s what we look for in our surrogates:
Age Requirements
We generally work with surrogates between 21 and 40 years old. This age range helps reduce medical risks while ensuring that each candidate is physically and emotionally prepared for pregnancy.
Healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)
A BMI between 18 and 32 is recommended. Maintaining a healthy weight lowers the chance of complications during pregnancy and contributes to a smoother journey for both you and the baby.
Previous Healthy Pregnancy
You must have successfully carried at least one pregnancy to term without major complications. This helps confirm your body’s readiness and gives you the insight to understand what the experience entails.
Legal Residency Status
You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder with valid documentation. For those on visas or with conditional status, eligibility is reviewed case by case. Proper documentation ensures your rights are fully protected under Massachusetts surrogacy laws, including the recently enacted Parentage Act.
Medical & Psychological Screenings
Every surrogate completes a comprehensive medical evaluation to confirm overall health and identify any risks.
You’ll also undergo a psychological assessment to ensure you feel emotionally prepared and supported throughout the surrogacy process.
Background Check
A standard background screening is part of the process for both you and your partner (if applicable). This helps ensure the safety and peace of mind for all parties involved.
Background Check
A standard background check is required as part of our screening process.
This helps confirm the security and peace of mind for everyone involved, including yourself and the intended parents.
U.S Citizenship or Permanent Residency
Surrogates in Illinois must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
This ensures smooth navigation through legal and medical processes, safeguarding your rights and clearly establishing parentage.
At ABC Surrogacy, our goal is to provide you with the tools, support, and guidance you need to begin your journey with confidence. If you’re considering becoming a surrogate in Massachusetts, we’d love to walk this meaningful path with you.
Screening Process for Potential Surrogates
At Abundant Beginnings Co. (ABC Surrogacy), we follow established best practices- including those recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) – to ensure that your surrogacy journey is safe, respectful, and deeply rewarding. Below is a step-by-step look at what you can expect when becoming a surrogate in Massachusetts.
Matching & Contracting
We begin by thoughtfully reviewing the preferences and values of both you and the intended parents to create a mutually aligned match. Independent consultations are arranged so everyone can discuss expectations, communication styles, and shared goals, building a solid foundation from the start.
Once you and a family decide to move forward together, experienced Massachusetts surrogacy attorneys guide both sides through the legal process. Per Massachusetts law, you’ll be provided with your own legal counsel at no cost to you to make sure your rights are clearly protected and every part of the agreement is fully understood.
Signing the Agreement
When both parties are ready, you’ll review and sign a formal surrogacy contract. In accordance with the Massachusetts Parentage Act, this agreement outlines:
- Legal responsibilities
- Compensation and reimbursements
- Health and autonomy protections for you during pregnancy
- Plans for delivery, communication, and medical decision-making
All contracts must be notarized and signed before any fertility medications are administered, in line with state requirements.
Medications & Pregnancy
Under the care of a fertility specialist, you’ll begin a personalized medical protocol that prepares your body for embryo transfer. This stage often includes hormone medications and lifestyle guidelines to support a healthy, successful pregnancy.
You’ll stay in close communication with your clinic, following all instructions on timing and dosages. ABC Surrogacy is always just a call away if you have questions or need support during this phase.
Ongoing Care & Communication
Once a pregnancy is confirmed, you’ll begin routine prenatal care with your OB/GYN. You’ll also remain in contact with the intended parents, updating them on important milestones and ensuring everyone stays informed. Open, respectful communication is key to a positive experience for all.
Legal Preparations
At around 15 weeks of pregnancy (or whenever recommended by your legal team), ABC Surrogacy will coordinate with your attorney to initiate a pre-birth parentage order. This ensures the intended parents’ names are placed on the baby’s birth certificate shortly after delivery, no post-birth adoption needed in most cases.
Massachusetts law offers strong legal protections for both you and the intended parents, providing clarity and peace of mind as you approach delivery.
Delivery & Post-Birth Support
Surrogacy is more than a medical process. It’s an emotional and deeply personal experience. From maintaining regular communication with the intended parents to managing the physical and emotional ups and downs of pregnancy, many surrogates describe it as a part-time job with full-time meaning.
Having a strong support system, whether it’s a partner, family member, or close friend can make all the difference. We also recommend entering the process from a stable emotional place, so you’re prepared to navigate whatever comes your way with resilience and grace.
Delivery Day & Beyond
On the big day, your hospital care team, ABC Surrogacy, and the intended parents will all work together to ensure a smooth and respectful experience. After delivery, legal documents are finalized and the intended parents’ names are placed on the birth certificate, in accordance with Massachusetts law.
The post-birth period often brings a sense of relief, pride, and joy, knowing you’ve made a life-changing difference for another family.

We proudly support all family-building journeys—regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status—and we’re honored to work with surrogates who share our belief in creating loving families in all forms.
When you partner with ABC Surrogacy, you may have the opportunity to help build families for same-sex couples, single parents, and LGBTQ+ individuals from across Massachusetts and beyond. With the passage of the Massachusetts Parentage Act, our state has taken a bold and affirming step toward true equality in surrogacy. The law explicitly protects the rights of all intended parents, regardless of gender or marital status, to establish legal parentage from birth. This means:
- Pre-birth orders are available to LGBTQ+ individuals and couples.
- Birth certificates list intended parents as “Parent and Parent,” ensuring equal recognition.
- Legal processes no longer require genetic ties or traditional family structures to define parenthood.
These legal advancements reflect Massachusetts’ progressive, inclusive spirit and they allow surrogates and intended parents alike to move forward with confidence and clarity.
At ABC Surrogacy, we ensure that every surrogate feels safe, respected, and supported throughout their journey. By joining us, you’re not only helping to grow a family, you’re also playing a vital role in creating a more inclusive and compassionate future.
If you believe in the power of love to shape families in all forms, we’d be honored to walk this journey with you.
