Why Be A Surrogate?

Becoming a surrogate involves big commitment, but ultimately brings the reward of helping create new families.

Compensation & Costs

Surrogacy in Minnesota offers a unique financial and emotional journey, with compensation reflecting the incredible commitment surrogates make. The base compensation for first-time surrogates in Minnesota typically ranges from $55,000 to $60,000. For those who have previously embarked on this journey, the compensation can exceed $72,000, acknowledging their experience and dedication.

Beyond the base compensation, surrogates in Minnesota receive additional financial support for related expenses, such as maternity clothing, medical insurance, monthly allowance, childcare, and travel costs for medical appointments, etc. The total compensation package, including these additional benefits, can reach or surpass $80,000 to $85,000. Payments are structured in installments throughout the pregnancy and into the post-delivery period, ensuring surrogates are supported at every stage.

It’s essential for intended parents to secure a health insurance policy that comprehensively covers the surrogate’s prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care. In Minnesota, surrogates are safeguarded from incurring out-of-pocket costs related to the pregnancy and childbirth. Any deductibles, copayments, and other related expenses are fully reimbursed by the intended parents, ensuring the surrogate’s financial and physical well-being is prioritized. In cases where an existing employer policy does not cover these aspects, the intended parents will take responsibility, providing peace of mind for the surrogate.

Minnesota Surrogate Requirements

Surrogates in Minnesota should be between 21 and 40 years old, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18 and 32.

These criteria help ensure the surrogate’s capability to carry a pregnancy with minimized medical risks.

Surrogates must have had at least one live, healthy birth.

This demonstrates their ability to undergo pregnancy and delivery with resilience.

Surrogates must be United States citizens, lawful permanent residents, or hold a green card in the U.S.

If a surrogate is a legal resident or legal immigrant, documentation valid for at least 2 years is required.

Comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations are conducted to confirm surrogates are in excellent health

Mentally and physically, without conditions that could jeopardize the pregnancy or the surrogate’s well-being.

A thorough background check is part of our process.

This ensures there is no history of criminal activity (for the surrogate or her partner) that could impact the surrogacy journey or reflect adversely on ethical standards.

Surrogates must engage their own legal counsel to review all surrogacy agreements.

This step is crucial to fully understand the legal aspects, rights, and responsibilities involved in the surrogacy process. Our agency has a number of experienced family formation attorneys who we trust to represent our surrogates in Minnesota.

Screening Process for Potential Surrogates

The journey to becoming a surrogate in Minnesota, while deeply rewarding, begins with a detailed and thorough screening process. This process ensures the safety and readiness of all parties involved in the surrogacy journey. In Minnesota, where surrogacy is embraced with a friendly and supportive approach, our agency facilitates a smooth and comprehensive screening for potential surrogates.

Required Screenings

Before matching with intended parents, surrogates must successfully complete all required screening phases. Our agency is here to guide surrogates through each step, ensuring clarity and support throughout.

Medical Screening: Surrogates undergo an extensive evaluation by a Reproductive Endocrinologist. This includes a review of medical records, an in-person physical examination, and detailed lab screenings for both the surrogate and her partner (if applicable), ensuring medical suitability for the surrogacy journey.

Psychological Evaluation and Personality Testing: To ensure emotional readiness and stability, surrogates—and their partners or spouses, when relevant—must participate in a comprehensive psychological evaluation conducted by a licensed mental health professional. This evaluation includes personality testing, providing a deep insight into the surrogate’s emotional and psychological readiness for surrogacy.

Criminal Background Checks: Ensuring the safety and integrity of the surrogacy process is paramount. Therefore, background checks are conducted on all adults living in the surrogate’s household, confirming a safe and stable environment for the surrogate journey.

The Surrogacy Process

In Minnesota, a state recognized for its supportive approach towards surrogacy, our agency operates with a deep commitment to excellence and adherence to the guidelines set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. The collaborative efforts of professionals in the assisted reproduction field have established standards aimed at optimizing a woman’s experience and success throughout the surrogate journey.

Matching and Contracting

Our agency plays a pivotal role in facilitating the connection between you and prospective intended parents, carefully considering mutual preferences and compatibility to ensure a harmonious match.

Independent sessions are arranged with our agency to clarify expectations and ensure alignment between you and the intended parents before formal matching. Legal experts then guide you through the contract, thoroughly reviewing terms to safeguard your rights throughout the surrogacy journey.

Once a mutual agreement is reached, a comprehensive surrogacy contract is signed, detailing the responsibilities and expectations of both parties, providing a clear framework for the journey ahead.

Medications and Pregnancy

The next step involves preparing your body for the embryo transfer through prescribed medications, followed by close adherence to medical guidelines from your OB/GYN and the intended parents’ reasonable requests. This includes regular prenatal checkups and maintaining open communication with the intended parents.

Around the 15-week mark, our agency notifies the legal team to begin the process for securing the birth certificate and the necessary court orders to establish the intended parents’ legal parentage, ensuring a smooth transition post-birth.

Delivery and Post-Birth Considerations

Becoming a surrogate encompasses more than fulfilling medical criteria; it’s about understanding the emotional and psychological impact of surrogacy on you and your family. The commitment involves significant time for medical appointments, alongside continuous interaction with the intended parents, mirroring the dedication akin to a part-time job.

Acknowledging the hormonal shifts during pregnancy and their emotional effects is crucial. An active support system, including partners, family, and friends, becomes indispensable during this period, providing the strength and comfort needed.

Entering surrogacy from a stable mental and emotional state is foundational, preparing you for any challenges that may arise during pregnancy.

Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families

At Abundant Beginnings, we champion the principle of inclusivity, offering equal opportunities to all aspiring surrogates, irrespective of the sexual orientation or marital status of the intended parents. Minnesota’s approach to surrogacy is characterized by its openness and support, facilitating surrogacy arrangements for LGBTQ+ intended parents in an environment free from discrimination.

In Minnesota, the legal framework for surrogacy is crafted to be inclusive, establishing a non-discriminatory foundation for surrogacy agreements and the affirmation of legal parentage. The terminology used in legal documents and agreements is intentionally neutral, referring to “intended parent(s)” without imposing limitations based on gender, sexual orientation, or marital status. This legal clarity ensures that, from birth, the intended parent or parents hold unequivocal parental rights, embracing the diversity of modern families.

We are committed to making every surrogacy journey a profoundly positive and fulfilling experience for everyone involved. With Abundant Beginnings, you’re supported in creating families that are as diverse as they are loving, in an atmosphere that values and respects every individual’s dream of parenthood.
