My Wife Was A Surrogate – A Husband’s Story
By: Adam Stromwall
The first time I heard about surrogacy was while my wife, Julie was pregnant with our first child. She said, “I really want to carry a baby for someone someday. This experience is incredible and you know how bad my heart hurts for couples unable to conceive or carry.” My response was what any man would think… I knew the risks involved in pregnancy and at first I was worried for my wife’s health. Throughout her pregnancy, she continued to tell me her desire to pursue surrogacy and everything she thought about it.
We had our second child a little over a year later and throughout that time, my wife continued to remind me that someday she would be a surrogate. It was over a period of 4 years and I really had time to think about what she wanted to do, and what it would mean for us as a family. While I was initially hesitant, I trust my wife and know she is a very logical thinker. We decided to take the next steps, and she began researching agencies.
Julie had a very specific idea about the support she wanted during the process, and that is why she chose Abundant Beginnings™. They encouraged me to be a part of the interview process and to ask questions so that I felt comfortable with the next steps, and in a short time I, too, felt ready comfortable with the decision. We went through all the steps and eventually got to meet the couple we were going to support in becoming parents. I was blown away at how much compassion and empathy I felt for complete strangers. I couldn’t WAIT for my wife to get pregnant and deliver that baby for them.
Throughout the pregnancy, I helped Julie and took care of her as much as I did with our own pregnancies. It was important to me that I played a roll in the journey, as well… and for me that meant taking care of my wife. I loved what we were doing; it felt so great to be helping a couple experience the same joy we have had with our own children. The thing that I looked forward to was seeing the intended father hold his son for the first time, remembering how amazing that was for me as a new father. It was a big thing for us to do as a family, and I will never regret any of it.
My wife is going to become a surrogate a second time, and I am already very much looking forward to it. Seeing the first family have a baby and playing a part in that meant so much to me, and I can’t wait for us to be able to do it again. The joy of the journey was incredible. We are so thankful for this opportunity. To my beautiful wife, Julie, you are amazing, and I’m grateful to be a part of this journey with you.
